Borrego Springs is recognized as a designated "international dark sky" settlement, therefore there are no stop lights in Borrego Springs and night time lighting is kept to a minimum to protect the views of the night sky. It provides outstanding opportunities for exploring the star filled night sky. Borrego Springs has pueblo-style, modern architecture and ranch-style house architecture. Borrego Springs was designated as California's first International Dark-Sky Community by the International Dark-Sky Association. It is a center for public astronomy activities throughout the year.
The name of Anza-Borrego State Park is derived from a combination of Juan Bautista de Anza and "borrego" which is Spanish for little lamb,or bighorn sheep. The 600,000 acres Anza-Borrego Desert State Park surrounds the town and it is the largest state park in California. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is located on the eastern side of San Diego County (a two-hour drive from San Diego). Anza-Borrego Desert State Park features washes, wildflowers, palm groves, cacti and sweeping vistas. And you have the opportunity to see roadrunners, golden eagles, kit foxes, mule deer, bighorn sheep, iguanas, chuckwallas and the red diamond rattlesnake.
There are biking trails, hiking trails, horseback riding, and you can use an ATV or a proper vehicle for your outdoor desert activities to navigate through rough roads. Dogs are not allowed cross-country or on hiking trails.
Starting November 3, 2017, there are $10 day-use parking fee per vehicle (Fridays to Sundays and holidays) at the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park visitor center.
Metal Sky Art Sculptures of Borrego Springs, CA. There are just about 130 life sized metal sculptures scattered throughout the town of Anza Borrego Springs. You can get a map (visitor center of the park) to guide you to specific sculptures you would like to see.
There are 150 miles ( 241.4 kilometers) by car from Los Angeles to Borrego Springs, following the CA-79 S route and CA-78 E route to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
Los Angeles to Borrego Springs are 2 hours 45 minutes (depends on the traffic) far apart, if you drive non-stop.
